Plastic affects the health and wealth of Bonaire
Plastic in the food chain:
- Some studies have shown that microplastics are present in around 75% of fish.
- 90 percent of sea salt contains microplastics.
- Microplastics have also been found in tap water, beer and canned seafood.
- Increasing amounts of plastic in food and seafood will impact the health of Bonairians.
Beach Litter
In 2019 Clean Coast Bonaire, found 10,000 items of litter (50% were cigarette butts) at Te Amo Beach. Dirty beaches are less attractive to both tourists and locals.
